St. Martins Booktown

Booktown Special event: June, 2008

Tea with Bonnie Davidson

It was a full house on Monday June 23rd when Ontario author Bonnie Davidson entertained and enlighten the guests at Mrs. Brown’s Tea Room. Proceeds from the afternoon’s book sales benefitted the St. Martin’s Booktown Initiative.

Bonnie teased us with leading snippets read from each of her four novels – three murder mysteries and one romance - that she has written to date. Like any good author, she had us hooked from each opening paragraph.

She shared how she herself needs to play detective in order to write realistically about murder and mayhem – occurrences that she, as a retired geriatric nurse and wife of an Anglican priest, has no personal knowledge!

Bonnie also informed us about self-publishing, which she has succeeded at handsomely. Her first novel, Hallowed Be Thy Name: A Murder Mystery, set in a church, sold out its full run – due in part, Bonnie admitted, to the fact that everyone in her husband’s congregation purchased a copy looking to find themselves in the story!

While Bonnie discussed the various writing styles she has utilized, the numerous foreign locales where she has set her tales (places that she herself has visited) and the genre of murder mystery, her guests partook of full afternoon tea. From the exquisite finger sandwiches (the gingered carrot deserving special mention), to fresh-baked scones served with butter, clotted cream, lemon curd, and homemade jam, we continued by feasting on dainty and delectable sweets, all served with a bottomless “cuppa” tea.

Each guest received her choice of one of Bonnie’s novels Bermuda Onions - Layers of Intrigue; The Cruise Ship Murders; or Dream Lover, personalized and autographed y the author.

All in all, the afternoon was a delight!
