St. Martins Booktown

A “Novel” Way to Celebrate

UNESCO’s World Book Day

ST. MARTINS PROCLAIMED NEW BRUNSWICK’S BOOKTOWN

April 23, 2007 UNESCO World Book Day will mark the opening of the first phase of a project to make St. Martins Atlantic Canada’s first Booktown.

St. Martins, New Brunswick, April 23 2007 – In conjunction with UNESCO World Book Day Mayor Jim Huttges of St. Martins, will issue a Proclamation that will formally launch the first phase of the project to make St. Martins New Brunswick’s Booktown. This follows the declaration on Friday, April 20, 2007 in the New Brunswick Legislature by the Honourable Stuart Jamieson, Minister of Tourism & Parks in support of St. Martins as New Brunswick’s Booktown.  St. Martins will be the first and only book town in Eastern Canada - an exciting ‘first’ for New Brunswick.

The purpose of the St. Martins Book Town Initiative is to promote the Village of St. Martins, and surrounding communities by attracting visitors whose enjoyment of books can be combined with our exceptional outdoor attractions and Eco-adventures.

The Booktown Initiative intends to foster the sustainable growth of our community by attracting and supporting booksellers, bookbinders, artists, writers and other artisans in the book industry. There are opportunities for book dealers to move into the village, as well as for other business that the booktown banner will enhance and promote. We will be a community of businesses related to books.

St. Martins is already a world class tourist destination and this initiative fits the policies of The NB Self-Sufficiency Task Force and supports “where things happen first” in New Brunswick. This innovative project is supported by the Province of New Brunswick, Village of St. Martins Council and Chamber of Commerce as well as local artists, business and community members. We plan to fill every nook and cranny with books and truly become a “town of books.”

We are very proud of St. Martins and all it has to offer, it is New Brunswick’s undiscovered jewel which when combined with the Book Town Initiative will give our visitors a novel all-weather cultural experience.
